The Chainmail Coif

The Coif was a chainmail piece of armor that was worn on the head. It served two purposes. First off it was extra protection, and very good because of the chain. But secondly it also served as a buffer between the knight's body and his plate armor. The coif was even good protection without the helmet.

The construction and use of chain as a protective garment was a brilliant development in medieval times. It was extremely effective and much lighter than plate mail. Although if you get some you are still going to be surprised by the fact that it is heavy! It is not cloth it is still metal!
